Yum was the first map to be done with all new world materials following a theme. I thought of a themed map back in the first betas already, but didn't have time to create one back then. For other games, a candy land seems to only exist as unofficial maps, so all the more fun to make an official one for CI. I started out by creating the smarties-in-chocolate world material to see if candy could actually work in our world model. Everything looked just fine so I kept going. After some more work, I had 7 new world materials all going with the candy theme.
As for the map, I had no thought up concept to start building around. The candy materials themselves worked as the concept. When I started with the map I played around some and made a small cavern that I wanted to keep. Right after I found that I wanted a bigger radius on the asteroid. Not wanting to start over I started terraforming the whole asteroid by covering it evenly using the platform-shape. Next thing was creating a path made of fudge spiraling down to one of the entrances of the cave. This turned out pretty good as the slope when going down the spiral had just the right angle to give a small overview of the inside of the cave. I decorated the surroundings of the spiral with two giant candy canes. This turned out harder than it sounds since getting just the right angle for the canes was not easy and it looked really odd if it was off even by a few degrees.
A really important aspect when creating CI-maps is the flow of paths. Even though the players are free to go anywhere by using the dirtgun, we still want paths to follow and unique structures working as navigational landmarks. I usually throw in some short bridges with tunnels underneath them and slopes connecting high and low areas to create varying "over and under" parts of the map. It is also important to give the players several open choices at each crossing.
One major pathing in Yum is the cookie fort. Shaped like an S, the path through the cookie fort takes the player from one part of the map to another. Even though the players can create holes in the fort, most of the times they just follow the inside path because it's faster. This fact can be used to the map-makers advantage. Next to the cookie fort I put a tower structure similar to the one in Fort with a turning path on the inside that leads to the top. This one is abit bigger so I made a path going through it as well. Near the tower I made the two platform on a pillar structures just in range for the dirtgun to connect from the tower. As usual, I made sure to paint paths just about everywhere and add a few smaller structures to limit the depth of the open areas.
